Odor Experience Facilitates Sparse Representations of New Odors in a Large-Scale Olfactory Bulb Model

Prior odor experience has a profound effect on the coding of new odor inputs by animals. The olfactory bulb, the first relay of the olfactory pathway, can substantially shape the representations of odor inputs. How prior odor experience affects the representation of new odor inputs in olfactory bulb and its underlying network mechanism are still unclear. Here we carried out a series of simulati...

Olfactory coding in the turbulent realm

Long-distance olfactory search behaviors depend on odor detection dynamics. Due to turbulence, olfactory signals travel as bursts of variable concentration and spacing and are characterized by long-tail distributions of odor/no-odor events, challenging the computing capacities of olfactory systems. How animals encode complex olfactory scenes to track the plume far from the source remains unclea...

Odor Representations in Olfactory Cortex: “Sparse” Coding, Global Inhibition, and Oscillations

The properties of cortical circuits underlying central representations of sensory stimuli are poorly understood. Here we use in vivo cell-attached and whole-cell voltage-clamp recordings to reveal how excitatory and inhibitory synaptic input govern odor representations in rat primary olfactory (piriform) cortex. We show that odors evoke spiking activity that is sparse across the cortical popula...

Complementary codes for odor identity and intensity in olfactory cortex

The ability to represent both stimulus identity and intensity is fundamental for perception. Using large-scale population recordings in awake mice, we find distinct coding strategies facilitate non-interfering representations of odor identity and intensity in piriform cortex. Simply knowing which neurons were activated is sufficient to accurately represent odor identity, with no additional info...

In vivo whole-cell recording of odor-evoked synaptic transmission in the rat olfactory bulb.

One of the first steps in the coding of olfactory information is the transformation of synaptic input to action potential firing in mitral and tufted (M/T) cells of the mammalian olfactory bulb. However, little is known regarding the synaptic mechanisms underlying this process in vivo. In this study, we examined odor-evoked response patterns of M/T and granule cells using whole-cell recording i...
